Welcome to The Ultimate Tomato Experience!

Dearest friends and family. You are about to see and have described to you one of the world's most interesting festivals. Please don't be frightened by what you see, but rather take joy in the fact that you know a someone who has actually participated in what is described herein.

"La Tomatina" is a festival that started in 1944 as an protest against the fascist Spanish dictator, Ferdinand Franco. I don't recall the exact details of how the flinging of the tomatoes began to at whom they were flung. I do know that now the tomato flinging begins at noon and they are flung and anyone and anything that is in the path of the aribtrary tomato flinging.

UPDATE MARCH 2003: A bit of history can be found here http://www.lahoya.net/tomatina/histoin.html. And the official La Tomatina website can be found here: http://www.lahoya.net/tomatina/histoin.html

"La Tomatina" takes place in a small Spanish village called Buñol approximately 30 miles southwest of Valencia. The village of Buñol is home to about 10,000 people, but on the last Wendesday in August, it's home to about 10,000 additional visitors from all over the world.

My experience begins in Barcelona. . .
